David Evans and Richard Taylor started building the cross country course at Chatsworth in 1998. Chatsworth is one of British Eventing's flagship events, and incorporates a Novice course as well as the CIC3* and the FEI world cup tracks.

Initially designed and organised by Mike Etherington Smith, Ian Stark took over the design first of the Novice course and then the CIC3* and FEI World Cup in 2007.

The stunning historic park landscape is made good use of by Ian Stark who is known for his big bold cross country tracks. The track incorporates many natural as well as historic features such as the Ice pond and Queen Mary's Bower water jump complexes.

Recent years have seen Chatsworth cancelled twice due to ground conditions caused by the prolonged rainfall that has characterised many recent springs. 2009 saw the Novice course run on the Saturday but the abandonnment of the Sunday's Advanced competitions. In 2012 Chatsworth horse trials did not run following the rainfall that had led to the cancellation of Badminton two weeks earlier.

THE CHATSWORTH SCULPTURES

In a unique marriage of art and equestrianism, the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire commissioned leading contemporary British artists to design and produce sculptures for Chatsworth Park that could also act as fences for the International Horse Trials. These now form a unique element to the cross country course at Chatsworth, and act as visitor attractions for the remainder of the year.

David Evans worked with the artists and built two of these five fences to their designs. These are'Pegasus'by Tim Harrisson, and 'The Two Graces' by Allen James.

Visit Chatworth's website to see all the sculpture jumps and find out more about Art in the Park
