Bramham horse trials 2011, 2nd fence

David Evans and his team joined course designer Ian Stark at Bramham International Horse Trials in 2011.

Hey Diddle Diddle

Recent years have seen a great deal of change at Bramham, including work on infrastructure and the main arena fields.

David & Richards first year at Bramham included modernising and revamping the cross country course alongside making significant improvements to the ground and the track.

2011 and 2012 saw many new obstacles built including the water complex (complete with giant lobster and water spouting whales!) as well as a new coffin, an owl hole, the Welcome to Yorkshire Ys and the Hey Diddle Diddle complex. All the obstacles making up the course have to be removed following the event each year, with ditches and hollows infilled for the Leeds Music Festival which takes place on the park in August.

The Leeds festival has a significant impact on the condition of the ground: tent-pegs, campfires and other hazards mean that the track has to be looked after diligently both following the festival and before the horse trials.

After a massive clearup following the festival, specialised machines are used to remove any errant tent pegs and other detritus, followed by many course walks alongside repeated mowing and watering by the dedicated Bramham ground staff once the line of the cross country track is marked out.

The unbelievably wet 2012 season which led to cancellations of Badminton and Chatsworth, and then Gatcombe in an Olympic year meant extra classes were held at Bramham to aid Olympic selection and to give horses and riders a much needed chance of a 3* ride Brilliant Bramham to the rescue! Thankfully the ground drains very quickly at Bramham and despite torrential rain in the days leading up to the event (and some emergency groundworks!!) the track stood up fantastically well thanks to the preparatory work undertaken by David, Richard and their team alongside the estate staff.
